Common problems with Roofs

Leaks
Roof leaks are a serious problem that plagues many roofs. This is caused by many things from improper installation, weathering, hail, faulty product, and other damage. How do I know if my roof is leaking? The most common sign of a leaky roof is stains that appear on your ceiling and roof sheeting in the attic. If you see any sign of a leak it is very important to address the problem immediately to prevent from father damage. The water that penetrates your building envelope can cause serious health problems dues caused by mold and in severe cases mold spores can be deadly. Not only is it important to fix immediately for health reasons but the sooner you identify the problem and address it the lest costly it can be.

Ice Dams
This is very common problem in Minnesota homes because of the severe winters that we endure. An Ice dam is created when an attic or roof is either improperly vented or when there is a warm area under your roof that melts the snow resulting in an ice dam. These ice dams can be very detrimental to your roof not only for the weight of the ice in a specific location it also cause the shingles and water barriers to become extremely weathered and in time fail.

Roofing Materials

Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt shingles are the most popular choice as a roof cover because it is cost effective and is visually appealing. The two major types of asphalt shingles are three tab (your basic shingle) and architectural (a more decorative type). These shingles offer anywhere from a 20 year manufacturer warranty to a 50 year manufacturer warranty. This type of though very durable and long lasting can be damaged very easily from hail, debris, and high winds.

Metal Roofing
Metal roofing has a great reputation for durability and its style. There are many benefits to this type of roofing in our climate zone, the most notable is that it sheds snow very well also it is not damaged by hail. Some find this roof not so desirable because in rain or hail storms it can be very loud (that classic "tink" sound).

Cedar Shakes
This type of roofing material is a timeless style that appeals to many people because of its long life and durability. Installation of this product can be slower than asphalt and is usually twice the cost in material. The down side of cedar shakes is that they can become covered in moss which created water issues and rot.
